My favourite photograph from Bologna features a monumental staircase leading to the city hall or Palazzo Comunale. Known as the Horse Stairs, these steps were designed for horse drawn carriages during the 16th century. This explains why the stairs are so flat.

On the first day in Bologna, we found the most peaceful, ornate and visually stunning church imaginable. The Madonna di Galliera was not listed as a top sight on Trip Advisor. Nor was it featured in any of the blog posts and books we’d read beforehand.
