Secret World War II Bunker in Liverpool – Western Approaches Museum

western approaches Liverpool

Until recently I had no idea that there was a massive 50,000 square-foot Second World War military bunker located underground in Liverpool City Centre. This fascinating restored historic space has been open to the public since 1993. It might have taken me 20 years to discover and finally visit, but it was definitely worth it in the end.

This bomb-proof area was built on the orders of Sir Winston Churchill and housed the operational HQ for the Battle of the Atlantic – the longest naval sea battle in history and one which is regarded as the most important win in the war against Germany.

Around a third of this space is open to the public at the Western Approaches Museum in Rumford Street. After falling into disrepair once the war was over, it was refurbished to look as it would have done at the time. The highlight of the self tour was definitely the recreated operations room where military plans would have taken place. This featured a huge map table where ship positions were tracked. Besides all of the operation rooms, there were also sleeping quarters and a canteen area.

Since opening more than two decades ago, this museum has kept a relatively low profile. It’s really spacious and took us a good hour to walk around the labyrinth of walkways and rooms where top-secret coded messages would have been received and communicated to naval officers out at sea.

I visited for the first time in October, just before it was due to close for the season, but as it’s now open again to the public this seems like the perfect time to share the experience. Have a look at my photographs to get an idea of what it’s like inside and please take the time to visit if you find yourself in Liverpool.
