Driving In France: My Ideal Itinerary from Burgundy to Avignon

driving in france

From charming chateaus and vineyards to quaint villages and medieval castles, there is much to see on a drive through the French countryside. Me and Andy have often talked about going on a driving holiday in France.

A possible route to consider begins in Burgundy and heads to the south of France. Here are a few of the main stops we would want to make:

The Vineyards of Burgundy

Whether you’re a wine aficionado who loves learning about different types of wine and the production process or you just like to tempt the palate with an array of vino delights, Burgundy has some of the most popular wine routes in France. The stunning verdant landscape features lush rolling scenery dominated by row upon row of grapevines broken up by historic chateaus and medieval towns and villages. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are among the wine varieties produced here. The Grands Crus Wine Road (Route des Grands Crus) passes through the Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune vineyards and is a must for finding nostalgic wineries, captivating castles and interesting monuments.

Foodie Heaven in Lyon

Known as France’s second city, Lyon is famous for its vibrant foodie scene – in fact it has even been referred to in the media as the “food capital of the world”. Besides having an impressive offering of restaurants, cafes and bakeries, this city is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historic architecture from a range of eras including the Roman times and the Renaissance period. The capital of the Rhone-Alpes region and the French capital of gastronomy, Lyon is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.

The Historic Centre of Avignon

Picturesquely located on the banks of the River Rhone, this ancient walled city features gorgeous Gothic architecture, antique shops and well-known sights such as the Pope’s Palace and the Pont du Guard – a Roman aqueduct over the Gardon River. Like Lyon, Avignon has also been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Have you ever been on a driving holiday in France? What was your chosen route and what were the highlights?
