When thinking of going on a safari, the wild Kenyan expanse of the Masai Mara instantly comes to mind. But Canada has its very own wilderness and its own animals to rival the lions, elephants and zebras of Africa.

This week, I am travelling to Manitoba where I will be on the look out for Canada’s big five

  • Black bear
  • Bison
  • Moose
  • Polar bear
  • Beluga whale

The itinerary will take in the city of Winnipeg, before moving onto Riding National Park for some serious wildlife watching.

We will be on the look out for the likes of bison, black bears and moose along with elk and deer.

Then it is up north to Churchill where three-days packed full of activities have been organised, including dog carting, kayaking with beluga whales and polar bear watching.

I recently saw my first beluga whale at Vancouver Aquarium and cannot wait to see these beautiful creatures in their natural environment.

Every year around this time the Arctic belugas come to Churchill to spawn – so there will be lots of little baby belugas about.

Do you want to come along for the ride?

I will be reporting on the trip as it unravels on Twitter. You can follow my updates via the tag: #SMTManitoba

I will also post photographs on my Facebook page.

Thank you to Travel Manitoba and Frontiers North Adventures for inviting me along on this fantastic adventure.

  2. Very cool. Have lots of fun!

  3. A Canadian Safari – I love it! Looking forward to hearing about what wildlife you see! I’d love to see a polar bear outside the zoo.

    • Hi Gina, thank you! The safari was last week and I saw a polar bear, belugas and bison. Some people saw a moose, which I missed, but no black bear! I’ll have some posts written up next week :-)
