Fisherman’s Wharf, Victoria: Seals And A Village Of Floating Homes

A charming, colourful location to visit on a lovely sunny day in Victoria is Fisherman’s Wharf. Amongst the attractions are a village of floating homes, seals and a famously fabulous fish and chips restaurant.

It was actually by accident that I ended up here on the way back from a waterfront walk.

This is what I enjoy about walking… there is always a possibility of stumbling across great sights unexpectedly.

At first, I wanted to see why a crowd was gathered around the edge of a jetty. It turned out that regular visitors were some incredibly cute and playful seals.

Why were they hanging around so much? Because there were lots of people buying fish to feed them. I thought they looked slightly overweight and was not surprised as they did not need to make much effort to get fed. When the sun is out and people are about, they know where to be.

Besides the seals, a cheeky sea otter would pop up to try to get a bite as well. Unfortunately, it was gone nearly as fast as it had appeared so it was difficult to get a photograph.

I spent a lot of time watching the seals, which were always adorably animated.

They would swim off for a few minutes and then return, visibly diving under the water and spinning around before resurfacing for some more action.

A deliberate ‘feed me’ stare with those butter wouldn’t melt eyes and another person would be quickly queuing up to provide the next course of fish. These seals know exactly what they are doing.

Floating Homes Village

I enjoyed walking around a village of floating homes that were all beautifully painted in bright colours and had some quirky and quaint features to captivate the passers by.

What a stunning location to live, I thought to myself, as I glanced at the view…

The owners clearly have a lot of pride in keeping their homes looking good.

Swedish owners possibly?

This green one was probably my favourite of the lot; I particularly liked the fact it had a roof terrace.

The perfect ending to a great afternoon was devouring a delicious salmon burger from Barb’s – a famous, award-winning fish and chips place.

Do you like the look of Fisherman’s Wharf? Have you ever been here?

THis is an incredible place. I too love it. Did you know there is a floating home village here in South Delta as well?

It is a fab place to visit, especially for families I can imagine. I didn’t realise there was one near you as well :-)

Spooky, we were just there last night. We’d already eaten but I’m definitely going back for Barb’s fish and chips! Loved the float houses but I’d hate to live there with hundreds of people peering in my windows, most of them were up for sale we noticed.

Glad you made it here and that is a wee bit spooky you were there the day I published! You make a very good point about people nosing inside the houses. I didn’t realise there were so many for sale signs. I remember seeing one. The fish and chips are mega tasty, enjoy if you get back :-)
