Remembering Family Holidays

I have fond memories of family holidays. Me and my little sister were fortunate enough to have been taken away most years as youngsters. We would usually spend a week in a Welsh cottage with suspect stains on the couch and ridiculously low ceilings. But every few years we would travel further afield to places such as the Greek Islands, the Spanish Balearics and the Canaries.

My first holiday abroad was when I was around eight years old. This was to the beautiful resort of Puerto Pollensa on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

I remember my parents rented a car and, as my dad was struggling to adapt to driving on the other side of the road, he took a wrong turn and ended up driving up into the hills alongside a narrow cliff-side road with no barriers and a huge drop.

That picturesque image of a tree-lined street brimming with quaint restaurants is still vivid in my memory.

When I was 12, my first experience of the stunning Greek Islands came. My memories of Zante are amongst my favourite holiday recollections.

I remember swimming in the gorgeously warm Mediterranean Ocean, looking to the bottom of the crystal clear water and seeing all of the wonderful colours below. I discovered the wonderful peaceful creatures of the loggerhead turtles and was mesmerised by the Shipwreck Cove, a perfect isolated beach that is only accessible by boat.

Next up, when I was 15, was the Canary Island of Lanzarote. One of the highlights of this trip was getting to ride camels. We also took a boat ride over to neighbouring Fuerteventura for the day to walk amidst the sand dunes at Corralejo. I remember having loads of fun swimming in the waves. I suffered with terrible sea sickness of the return journey and missed spotting dolphins swimming besides our boat.

Aged 18, with the addition of my then boyfriend, we all travelled to the Greek Island of Crete. We stayed in the resort of Stalis, enjoying amazing food and plenty of shots of ouzo. During the holiday, we visited the old leper colony on Spinalonga Island and rode mopeds around the island.

This was my last family holiday. The ones since were with friends and partners. But my dad turns 60 next year, so this would be the perfect time to go away as a family again.
