A visit to the home of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts – Alnwick Castle in Northumberland

Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England, was the chosen location for some of the scenes at Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

It was no surprise as the castle is a true medieval marvel of gothic perfection.  I visited here on the way back from a wedding a couple of years ago and was interested to hear about the castle’s history.

Unlike most castles in the UK, this one is still lived in by the Percy family (Duke of Northumberland). The castle has been in the Percy family since the 1300s.

It also houses American students as part of the St Cloud State University project.

They live and study in the castle as part of a cultural exchange, in return for a certain amount of domestic work.
